The University of Minnesota developed a DBaaS model for its Oracle database services and has used it during the past three years to consolidate all of its Oracle database infrastructure to two centrally administered Exadata half rack machines. The presentation will cover the model design, migration process, and the benefits and challenges encountered. There will also be a preview of a presentation by the University scheduled for OpenWorld this September on the use of this model for the PeopleSoft database tier.

This presentation will focus on the work Thomson Reuters is doing to address some of its Database-as-a-Service requirements using the OpenStack framework. We will share some of the successes we have had so far and some of the challenges we are faced with. We will also discuss the additional features the 12c Multienant offers us and how we plan to weave that into our OpenStack environment.

About the Speakers

Karthik Kanwar - Senior Manager, Oracle


Andy Wattenhofer - Manager, Database Administration, U of M
Andy Wattenhofer is manager of database administration at the University of Minnesota. His team administers the enterprise and departmental databases for the organization in Oracle, MySQL, and SQL Server.


Boris Belous- Associate Architect, Thomson Reuters
Boris Belous is an Associate Architect with Thomson Reuters and has been with the company in various roles focusing on database technologies since 2005. Prior to that, Boris was a DBA with Tobin & Associates for many years, a consulting company in Rochester NY. Prior to that role, Boris was an assurance professional staff member with the Bonadio Group. In his years working with relational database technologies Boris has supported high visibility production databases, developed automation processes around database builds and maintenance, tested and evaluated numerous technologies and provided assistance to others in the company with respect to embracing and onboarding new technologies. Boris is currently assisting a small team of talented people tasked with materializing Thomson Reuters' foray into the "as-a-Service" cloud space, as it specifically pertains to database provisioning and maintenance.


Najam Qureshi - Senior Principal Consultant / Implemenation Manager for Engineered systems, Mythics

Najam spent the last 5 years working on Engineered systems, Oracle ExaData (V2, X2 and X3). Setup of ExaData, performance tuning of application queries for ExaData machines, migration of 12TB database to ExaData, application advance compression, applied data advance security and VPD, applied Hybrid Columnar compression with cardinality analysis of large tables, implemented DataGaurd from XD-X2 to XD-X3. Najam's specialties include Oracle Database backups for large databases and performance tuning.
